OF THE INDONESIA-THAILAND DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

Indonesia and Thailand diplomatic relationship has endured for 60 years this year of 2010. It was in 1950 when the diplomatic relationship was formally established followed by the establishment of their diplomatic missions in both Capitals. During the sixty year period, cooperation has been conducted in all sectors, among others, politics and security,economics, trade and education.
Exchange of visits between Leaders of Indonesia and Thailand has developed a mutual understanding between the governments. Cooperation mechanisms have been established to facilitate the existing bilateral cooperation, through Joint Commission, Consultative Forum for Technical Cooperation, Joint Agricultural Working Group, Energy Forum as well as Sister City and Sister Province.
In that regard, it is realized that sixty year period is not enough for a settled cooperative relationship between our countries. Therefore, it would be timely for both countries to review the bilateral cooperation as well as the roles that Indonesia and Thailand have played in the regional arena, such as ASEAN and G20. Such a review may identify the achievements in the bilateral cooperation and also the challenges faced by both countries in the region and plan the future stronger cooperation.
To commemorate the 60th anniversary, the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok in cooperation with Chula Global Network, Chulalongkorn University are planning to conduct a one day international Seminar to review the past and current relationship between Indonesia and Thailand to explore possibilities to enhance our countries’ friendship and cooperation.
