          The recent visit of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to Malaysia marks the official resumption of the Deep South peace dialogue. The event is long-awaited since the talks were suspended for one year. I have been watching this development with cautious optimism.

After the arson of six schools in Thung Yang Daeng District on the last Saturday, Pattani Province, Thai mainstream media unanimously reported the event and a so-called demonstrations against the crime by the local people on the last Tuesday.

I'm frequently asked by my friends who are outside the conflict area of the Southern Border Provinces of Thailand or Patani on what they can do in order to help us. Those who are working for organizations specialized in aiding and social works never ask this question, as they can be part of conflict solution by performing their duties. This question is always asked by those well-wishers whose job has nothing to do with conflict solution. The well-wishes of these people are highly appreciated, but I must confess that I'm always at a loss when met by such questions.

On 16 June I received a phone call from the commander of the Special Unit of Patani. I had met him several times before, and this time he told me that an intelligence officer of the local ISOC (The Internal Security Operations Command). I new the intelligence officer too, and he said they wanted to have a talk with me while having a cup of coffee with me, so I suggested to see them in a coffee shop in front of my university in Patani City.
